In Concert Sound Flies High with EV & The Blue Angels

May 26, 2006

ICP put the latest additions to their extensive EV inventory - EV XLC127+ line arrays, Xsubs, ZX5 and SxA250 boxes - to task in front of crowds that swelled to 50,000 people each day. In addition, over 500,000 people off base heard the show simulcast on local radio. ICP President Jay Rabbitt described the world of air show sound, and where EV fits into the equation:

“Since day one, EV equipment has delivered the sonic performance and reliability to help us build a reputation as the leaders in air show production.”

“ICP began doing air show production support over ten years ago. I spent the 1980s working as a remote broadcast producer/engineer with radio stations whilst also running ICP, and have always been a huge aviation buff, so it was a natural transition to provide turnkey production services for air shows. Since that time, ICP has worked with every major jet act - USN Blue Angels, USAF Thunderbirds, Canadian Snowbirds - as well as hundreds of other aerobatic acts and jet trucks. It’s a little known fact that air shows draw more people than any other entertainment events in the world, including NASCAR. Some of these shows can have 1,000,000 people in attendance every day during a typical Friday/Saturday/Sunday schedule, with as many as 250,000 needing sound coverage over a two-mile space at the largest shows.“

Crowds of this size require more than paging projectors on a 70V system, or a few speakers, microphones and a CD player. So, as well as designing distributed large-format EV sound reinforcement rigs specifically for these events, ICP’s service includes specialized staging, stage tops, special long-range audio transmitters, provision of specialized aircraft radios and antennas, coordination of music with the announcers, and interfacing with the FAA on many levels. Then, after these elements are addressed, ICP assembles the hardware to deliver a soundtrack worthy of the spectacle…

“Air show production is a niche market with specific requirements - to be part of this industry requires a high level of trust and cooperation among all parties involved,“ Rabbitt added. “Since day one, EV equipment has delivered the sonic performance and reliability to help us build a reputation as the leaders in air show production. Using the XLC gives us the wide coverage and long throw we need to cover these audiences - all with distortion-free, full-bandwidth intelligibility and a small footprint that keeps the sightlines open. At every show we do, we get dozens of compliments on the sound from the audience, performers, and military and civilian brass. This past weekend’s show at NAS Atlanta was no different. In fact, the new XLC127+ rig not only got rave reviews, it literally brought audience members to tears during some particularly moving parts of the show.

I’ll never forget a show two years ago that saw one of last flights of the Navy’s F-14 Tomcat jet before it was retired,“ Rabbitt continued. “The jet was making a low altitude (about 300’ off the ground), high-speed (600+ MPH) photo pass, and, just as the plane came over the treetops and the Navy announcer finished his last line, I cued “Danger Zone“ by Kenny Loggins and listened to the crowd of thousands scream in acceptance…there is no other feeling like it in the world - your eyes tear up and the hair on your arms stands on end! For moments like that, you want the best sound possible, and, with XLC, things are sounding better than ever!“

In Concert Productions’ relationship with Electro-Voice spans nearly 30 years. The company started out in 1977, providing very large mobile DJ systems during the height of the disco craze. EV was ICP’s first loudspeaker supplier. In 1980, ICP moved to Atlanta, GA, and began expanding into the production market, providing sound systems for corporate, concert and special events. Today, ICP operates out of a 20,000 sq. ft. facility in downtown Atlanta, and has earned a reputation for being one of the Southeast’s most respected and professional full-service production companies, providing sound, lighting, staging, stage tops, backline and video support.

ICP was the first company in Atlanta and the Southeast to purchase a Midas Heritage 3000 in 2000, and uses a wide range of Midas and Klark Teknik gear alongside its trusty EV loudspeakers. In December 2005, the company began selling the equipment it relies upon as a production company, offering customers ZX1, ZX5, XLC127+, XLC215, Xsub, XLD281, Xi1153A, Xi2181, QRx153 and QRx218 loudspeakers, along with Klark Teknik DN9848E processors.

Since implementing this change, ICP’s business has skyrocketed to a new level in sales, all with great reviews from their customers. Currently, ICP’s XLD rigs can be found at corporate business meetings in Colorado, their Xi boxes are busy at numerous festivals, and their XLC127+ rigs handling the largest outdoor and indoor special events and concerts from Atlanta to California to Las Vegas.

“EV represents the best in sound quality, rider-friendliness and return on investment,“ ICP President Jay Rabbitt commented. “Trust me, we were courted by EVERY manufacturer on the market, but I returned to an old friend - Electro-Voice and the Telex Pro Audio Group family of products.“
