EV EVID Loudspeakers Installed at Whataburger Field – Home to Nolan Ryan’s Corpus Christi Hooks Baseball Team

May 25, 2005

Ken Bridges Audio and Video of Corpus Christi installed a vast distributed sound system at the new stadium, comprised of over 200 EV EVID surface mountable and 48 EVSx300PIX weatherproof loudspeakers - an ideal balance of visual style, rugged reliability and high performance - much like Nolan Ryan himself. The system was designed by Boner Associates to provide maximum high fidelity coverage throughout the new facility. Ken Bridges described why EVIDs made sense from both an acoustic and aesthetic perspective:

“The system was hit from day one.”

“This is a great new venue, and we installed a sound system to really do it justice. Nolan Ryan is a baseball icon, this is his family business, and he came home to Corpus Christi to put his team here - it really is a privilege to be associated with what is sure to become a legendary ballpark. They just had their twentieth game at the field, and the whole season is sold out. Pretty good for a minor league team! It’s a large facility - the stadium has just over 5000 fixed seats, along with suites and additional fan areas, all with fantastic views of the Harbor Bridge over the centerfield wall. We installed a combination of dozens of EVID 4.2, 6.2 and 8.2 speakers, along with the Sx300PIXs. The great thing about the EVID line is that you can select a specific speaker for a specific surface area, all with the appropriate SPL and coverage characteristics. Plus they look just as good as they sound, which helps a lot when you’re putting in hundreds of units. We have another EV classic on the opposite end of the signal chain too - the announcer insisted that we put in an RE20 mic, and we were happy to oblige.“

Bridges added: “The system was hit from day one. The first game at the new stadium was on April 17th. The first time the system was really opened up was at a recent VIP event. It performed flawlessly, even though we still had some final adjustments scheduled. We like to make a strong first impression with our loudspeaker installations. I tell my guys that the first thing to come out of the speakers has to be music - we usually use “The Rhythm is Gonna Get You’ by Gloria Estefan. Sure enough, we tried that here and saw a lot of smiling faces - people simply weren’t expecting a distributed sound system at a ball park to sound that good. The EVIDs sound great for both spoken announcement intelligibility and source material playback, and have a low-profile look that means you hardly notice they’re there. The Sx300 is an industry-standard solution for all kinds of applications, and the PIX version adds weather resistant features to that reputation for reliability and sound quality. It’s a great-sounding system. Perhaps the highest praise came from Reid Ryan, Nolan Ryan’s son, who couldn’t say enough good things about the system. He approached me personally to let me know he was really impressed with the uniform coverage and clarity throughout the stadium. We’re really pleased to have been part of making the new stadium sound so superb.“
