Work began on the ultra-modern 52,000-seat stadium, which has a retractable roof and is built on the site formerly occupied by the Waldstadion, in June 2002 and was completed in May 2005.

Four areas are designated under the giant roof: sports arena, theater, exhibition center and convention center.
