Triathlon World Championship 2009 with Electro-Voice XLC

August 25th, 2009

Straubing, August 2009 One of the eight venues selected to host the 2009 ITU Triathlon World Championships, Kitzbühel, Austria, played host to devotees of the sport from the July 9 to July 12. And in addition to the men’s and women’s elite competitions, the four-day event offered a diverse programme of entertainment that included music, shows, and sporting challenges for both young (the Children’s Triathlon) and old (the Triathlon for “Everyman’). Kitzbühel-based rental company Murdock Music Entertainment Event & Multimedia GmbH was given the job of providing pro audio support for the event, and its team of specialists led by Production Manager Charles Wienand opted for an XLC system from Electro-Voice.

The challenges faced by the team from Murdock Music Entertainment Event & Multimedia GmbH were complex: Providing homogeneous coverage throughout a large, deeply ridged viewing area capable of accommodating several thousand spectators. And while the sporting action was interlaced with musical interludes provided by a roster of top DJs, the most important objective was intelligibility. In a complex event such as the triathlon commentary is crucial; it is impossible to generate any great excitement among spectators without. It was vital, therefore, to ensure that every word spoken by the event’s three commentators was clearly audible throughout all zones occupied by spectators.

For this reason, Wienand opted for an Electro-Voice XLC system. Two hangs comprising 16 XLC127 enclosures formed the main PA, with two Electro-Voice XLC215 flown bass units and four Xsubs providing added pressure in the low bass region during musical interludes. The system was driven by 16 EV CP3000S and CP2200 series power amplifiers.

“As one of the venues hosting the Triathlon world cup, Kitzbühel had to shape up against cities like London, Washington D.C. and Yokohama,“ says Alexandria Gieringer-Fabi, Marketing and Event Management Director for Murdock Music Entertainment. “The importance of the event was underscored by the throng of spectators attending the event and the enormous interest it generated worldwide. Expectations were exceedingly high, and under such circumstances, there was only one plausible option: Electro-Voice XLC.“

About the ITU World Championships

To attain the title of World Champion, triathletes need not only to excel in three different sporting disciplines - swimming, cycling and running - but to do so in eight different venues all over the world. This year, the sport’s governing body, the ITU, organized legs not only in major cities like Madrid, Washington D.C., London and Yokohama but also in smaller cities. The final leg will take place on the Gold Coast in Australia from Sept. 9 to Sept.13, which, like each of the preceding legs, will be followed on television by fans throughout the world.
