System Snapshot: Black Hole Studio, Toshima, Japan

Located conveniently in the heart of Ikebukuro, the commercial and entertainment district of Toshima, Japan, Ikebukuro Black Hole is a popular destination for bands and singers to perform and jam live on stage. On October 19, 2011, Black Hole Studio opened in the basement of Ikebukuro Black Hole. The concept? Provide a haven for musicians who need a practice space with great acoustics and great equipment.

Goal

In terms of sonic performance, the studio space had to measure up to the realities of a live stage environment; even with the volume cranked, the audio needed to be clear and intelligible, with no distortion. Since the studio management strives to provide the best value for their musician customers, they looked for loudspeakers that would meet their budget while providing excellent performance and reliability.

Solution

(14) Electro-Voice ELX115 and (2) ZX3-90 loudspeakers were installed in the four studio rooms, and provide clear, intelligible sound, even at high volumes. The affordability of the loudspeakers – even with such high audio quality – impressed the studio management.

EV PL80a microphones were also selected, providing superb quality for both live performances and recording. Dynacord CMS1000-3 mixing consoles and EV Q99 amplifiers were also put in place to ensure better audio control and quality.
