Signature Sound: Sound Reinforcement Leaders in New Brunswick with EV’ & Dynacord’

August 12th, 2005

They’ve had particular success with their Dynacord Cobra-4 and Cobra-2 rigs, whose pre-cabled and preprogrammed “plug in and play“ convenience is matched with high-output line-array performance. A recent three-day church event at Fredericton’s Aitken Center was a showpiece Cobra job, where high-SPL, distortion-free sound was delivered to every seat in the house using a combination of passive Cobra-2 and active Cobra-4 boxes, powered by EV and Dynacord amplifiers.

Signature Sound’s Mike Jones reported: “Summer Summit is a large annual church gathering that takes place at the Aitken Center arena in Fredericton. The three-day event attracts about 3000 people, and features a wide-ranging program of spoken word and live performances. This is our fifth year of providing sound reinforcement for the event, and our first using the Cobra system. We heard about the Cobra through our EV rep Gilles Elhadad, who suggested it as a compact, line-array counterpart to our trusty inventory of EV Xi boxes. Taking advantage of the Cobra’s extremely versatile rigging hardware, we flew arrays of one Cobra Far and two Cobra Top boxes per side, with six ground stacked Cobra Subs underneath - two extra Subs and EV P3000 amps added to the regular rig. We also brought in additional Cobra-2 Top boxes - one per side, angled as sidefills on top of the sub stacks. Once the truss was up, we flew the arrays in just five minutes. In the past we’ve tied in to the house PA’s delay ring, but that just wasn’t necessary this year - the coverage and clarity we got from this configuration was amazing, and the long-throw from the Far boxes really made a difference this year. We were able to compare the sound with the Xi rigs we’ve used in the past, and the Cobra held its own against their serious performance capabilities, and added the extra throw we needed. We clocked the Cobra’s SPL at 122 dB at one point, yet had zero complaints due to the clear, distortion-free sound. We had no idea we were hitting those kind of SPLs, which is the acid test of a good rig. Pretty impressive, coming from a system that only takes minutes to setup, and with such a small footprint.“

Jones added: “Another great thing about Cobra is that we can draw from our two rigs to build a larger single system that precisely addresses the needs of a larger space like Aitken Center, whilst maintaining full DSP control and line-array performance. It takes a matter of minutes to reconfigure the parameters in the system-dedicated CSR-4 DSP/drive rack to make this happen, and any extra boxes added -subs and sidefills for example - are required more for precise sonic detailing than for adding sheer SPL muscle. And, even with the additional boxes, the whole rig still fits neatly into the back of a small truck! Cobra makes attaining that level of finesse and control easy, even in a reverberant arena like this.“
