THE TEN TENORS ON TOUR WITH NEW EV XLD LINE ARRAY
A Midas Heritage 1000 at FOH ties the system together with the most vocal-friendly preamps in the business. Shaun Mclean, FOH engineer for the tour, reported:
“The size is what really makes a difference with the XLD. At 42 pounds a box we’re able to whip it in and out of venues with ease, which helps a lot when you’re doing eight show weeks with a two person audio crew - it’s just me and system tech Trevor Wallace. And there’s no compromise on performance - EV has simply engineered the best components into a more compact package. The XLDs are augmented with two X-Subs per side, which gives us ample low end. Two 1152 Xi boxes and four 1082 boxes are used as fills. Monitoring is all in-ear.
“EV’s line arrays have a reputation for great vocal reproduction, and a tour like this is the acid test in terms of vocals,“ Mclean continued. “The tenors’ voices sound warm and all the nuances come through in the harmonies. Of course, having the mic’s running through Midas preamps doesn’t hurt either - anything purple sounds good to me! I have a 48-channel Midas Heritage 1000 out front, which also made sense for the small size / big performance approach we had when spec’ing the tour.
“Coverage and clarity have been consistently excellent in a wide range of theatre venues, making it easier for the audiences - and the group - to get absorbed in the performance. The group like it best when I’m able to fly the arrays from within the proscenium arch, hanging off the grid. This is something we wouldn’t be able to do with a larger, heavier array. It becomes like a big set of headphones for them - they feed off the PA, it kicks the performance up a notch, and that dynamic translates to the crowd. Night after night the crowds leave happy, which is the most important thing.“
