State of the Art Synagogue Goes with EV

March 9th, 2006

The New Park Synagogue East in Pepper Pike, Ohio, is a magnificent mass of gently curving geometric forms, richly textured wood, masonry and glass. The 63,000 sq. ft. complex features an array of interior and exterior architectural details that are both inspired and practical, including two vertically recessed moving wall/doors on either side of the main Sanctuary that can be opened up to make one large space, or closed to make three separate rooms (Sanctuary, social hall and conference hall).

A plethora of high tech A/V systems are tastefully integrated amidst the acres of mahogany and maple paneling and ceiling treatments, all operated via discretely installed racks and control panels that keep the aesthetics intact. At the heart of this impressive new build project are sound reinforcement systems from EV and Dynacord, the result of a collaborative effort by regional audio specialists Sam Messina with Showtime Sound Company (design and installation), Don Mitchell with DSM and Associates(design/spec/auto-cad) Bob Bruno with Bruno Brothers Music (sales) and Jason Jacquemain (design and Northeast Ohio EV rep with CL Pugh).

“The audio installation we designed and installed here is actually four independent systems tied together via a Dynacord ProAnnounce DRM-4000 matrix/mixer and EV Dx38 processing,“ reported Sam Messina.“ The architectural concept was to allow the main spaces at the Synagogue to be combined when necessary, all at the touch of a button. Each audio zone therefore needed to function in the same way, with equal ease and without compromising the performance of the equipment when running in the smaller, independent audio zones. With this in mind, we addressed the clients specific needs for the lobby, meeting area, Sanctuary and adjoining conference/social halls with EV Sx80, FRX-122 and EVID C8.2 loudspeakers.“

“The system offers a high level of sonic control, flexibility and user-friendly operation,“ Messina continued. “It’s also literally heard but not seen - four compact Sx80s are recessed into the maple slat work on the 25-ft high Sanctuary ceiling, and covered with acoustic grille cloth. Though they look like nothing more than recessed lighting holes from the floor, the Sx80s sound as clear as a bell and the coverage is remarkable - no dead spots anywhere in the room. We worked closely with the carpenters on the mounting and custom-made cabinets, and installed two at the front and two at the back of the space firing down at 10-degree angles.“

As mentioned, the main Sanctuary is separated from two large adjoining halls by motorized doors. When the door to the social hall is opened to accommodate overflow, it creates one large space, and, using the DRM-4000, one large audio zone. The main performance stage speakers in this space are two FRX-122 boxes; when extra sound reinforcement is needed and the door is open, three additional Sx80s kick in, extending the Sanctuary Sx80 system into the social hall on a 70V circuit powered by an EV CPS2T. CPS2T power and Dx38 processing also handles the EVID C8.2 8-inch recessed ceiling speakers throughout the lobby, which is also used as a social event area. An EV CPS2.4 powers the four Sx80s in the Sanctuary. The drive rack holding all this together is another work of art, recessed and hidden by maple doors.

Messina added: “EV mics complete the signal chain; we installed EV PolarChoice Satellite 18-inch wireless podium microphones with Telex FMR-500 receivers - we started off with one and they liked it so much we put in three more. Again, these mic’s look as good as they sound, and the switchable pattern makes them as user friendly as everything else we installed. I’ve been installing EV equipment for around 30 years now. EV gear always does what it says it’s going to do, it comes out of the box ready to run perfectly, and it always sounds great. The client is very pleased with the results - it all looks fantastic - where any of the hardware can actually be seen - and it sounds even better! EV products are the best - the only way to go.““
