Arsenal Sound, EV, Midas, KT and the Dynacord Cobra: Maximum Effect, Minimal Footprint

September 1st, 2005

Wiggins Waterfront Park in Camden, New Jersey, was the setting for a summer-long outdoor concert series that included sold-out shows by perennial crowd pleasers the Yellowjackets, Average White Band and Maynard Ferguson. Bridgeton, NJ-based Arsenal Sound provided sound reinforcement for the concerts with their compact, “plug in and play“ powerhouse Dynacord Cobra system, which continues to bring Arsenal great satisfaction each time it delivers full coverage, high SPL sound that defies its minimal footprint. EV T221 stage monitors, Midas Venice (FOH) and Siena (Monitors) consoles and Klark Teknik DN370 equalization rounded out the rig. Arsenal’s Al Miller explained:

“It’s often the case that, when we set the Cobra-4 rig up for a show, the organizers and band engineers will approach us saying that we’re going to need more boxes, that we simply won’t have enough moving air to get the job done. By the time we fire the system up, however, those doubts are laid to rest. Initially we were contracted for one show, as the organizers wanted to hear the system do what we said it could do. It did, and we ended up using the Cobra for two more of the biggest drawing nights of the season. These concerts were no exception, and even we couldn’t believe how much sound was coming out of the Cobra using just four amps. There were around 10,000 people in the audience for the Average White Band, and the Cobra covered the entire crowd with distortion-free sound. The amphitheatre is a large, horseshoe-shaped, grass area that’s very wide, so the 120-degree coverage was really put to work. Though there are still many people in the industry who haven’t heard or heard of the Cobra system, it’s gathering momentum through proving itself in applications like this, and once it does, it leaves an indelible sonic impression. Add to that the fact that the whole system goes up in a matter of minutes, and you have best of both worlds.“

“The Cobra got compliments from all quarters,“ Miller added, “including some positive feedback from Yellowjackets FOH engineer Jeff Schick. He told us that mixing on the Cobra felt just like mixing in a recording studio, that the imaging was that impressive. It’s tough to achieve an imaging effect at an outdoor live event for crowds this large, so we took that as a real compliment. Add to that the fact that he had the channels on both the DN370 EQ and Venice console running flat, and the Cobra really does speak for itself in terms of balancing SPL power, precise distribution and transparent sound quality, be it for 600 or 6000 people. The key word we heard when discussing the system’s performance with the organizers after the show was “comfortable’: using the Cobra line array means that every watt of power is being used efficiently, giving us the controlled throw and full-bandwidth coverage we need, with no distortion or dead spots.“
