EV at ShoWest 2006: The Movies Have Never Sounded So Good!

April 20th, 2006

ShoWest gives people who work behind the scenes in the movie business the opportunity to interact with the familiar faces of film - A-list stars, multi-million-dollar grossing directors, producers and executives all pencil ShoWest in as a means of keeping their finger on the pulse of innovations in the industry. It also gives visitors the opportunity to hear some seriously slamming cinema sound…

Once again, EV sound systems from Boston Light and Sound Inc. provided an unforgettable soundtrack to ShoWest’s most anticipated events, including trailers for summer season megahits-to-be like Mission: Impossible 3, The Da Vinci Code and Superman Returns. For the third year running EV XLC line arrays gave a winning performance at the Le Theatre des Arts (Paris Las Vegas), and EV Variplex II XL Cinema Systems were used with equally impressive results at the Jubilee Theatre (Bally’s).

EV’s Monte Wise worked with BL&S and Dolby Laboratories on system design and setup during the show. “The Theatre of the Arts and the Jubilee are the venues for a continuous stream of big studio preview screenings, manufacturer demonstrations and technical seminars,“ Wise commented. “High quality audio is obviously a key element in selling blockbusters to potential buyers in the cinema industry, and EV sound was crucial in creating a lasting first impression - making a sonic impact to match the onscreen action.“

“Working with Monte Wise and BL&S makes our job so easy,“ says Russell Allen, Manager Exhibitor Support for Dolby. Dolby has tuned the systems for ShoWest for the past nine years, and supplies processors and expertise to ShoWest alongside the EV equipment, turning the two live venues into state-of-the-art- 5.1 movie palaces. “When you have Hollywood’s biggest talents in your theatre, everything has to be perfect,“ Allen added. “These people made the movie and know the soundtrack intimately - they’re hard to impress. We rock the house with EV and everyone leaves happy!“

“Everyone involved - the Dolby team, Chapin Cutler and Michael Rome at Boston Light and Sound - does a fantastic job every year,“ Wise added. “In fact, one very discerning “golden eared’ senior EV employee said the XLC sound at the Spiderman II preview a couple of years back was the greatest thing he’d ever heard… and he’s in charge of the XLC demo tour! The system sounded just as good this year, delivering all the low end punch that brings the special effects to life, and all the musical warmth, clarity and coverage to make the soundtrack move the audience.“

“One of the great things about using the XLC and its bigger brother the X-Line at events like this is watching the studio sound mixers and sound editors’ faces when the systems are cranked up,“ says Chapin Cutler. “They’re used to coming into a traditional movie house and fighting to get fidelity and punch from an installed system. At ShoWest, we have the opportunity to show them how their audio tracks CAN sound, and they are amazed. These systems are awesome!!!“

“It really says a lot about the quality and character of a sound system to have it be selected for such important screenings,“ says Monte Wise. “And, when you have people like Mitch Neuhauser (ShoWest Director) personally thanking EV, BL&S and Dolby for great sound in front of an audience comprised of the movie industry’s biggest and brightest, you know you’re doing something right!“
