LIVE EARTH HAMBURG WITH ELECTRO-VOICE AND MIDAS
Seven of the world’s great cities participated in Live Earth, a music marathon with a difference in which a global audience was exhorted to stop ignoring the dangers of global warming and climate change and commit themselves to the struggle against it.
Hamburg’s HSH-Nordbank Arena provided the venue for the German Live Earth event. The organizers enlisted the services of Satisfy-a highly respected complete service provider-to handle the sound reinforcement. In addition to local hero Jan Delay, the Hamburg stage was graced by Shakira, Snoop Dogg, Enrique Iglesias, Katie Melua, Reamonn, Chris Cornell, Silbermond, Juli and Yusuf Islam.
The FOH and monitor positions were occupied by a total of four Midas Heritage 3000 and two Heritage 2000 consoles, while Electro-Voice line arrays (X-Line and XLC) powered by Tour Grade TG-7 amps with RCM-26 Remote Control Modules projected the sound to the furthest reaches of the audience. The nerve center handling the signal distribution for routing, matrix, delays and master EQs was an EV N8000 NetMax.
Despite the bad weather, over 30,000 fans were determined not to miss the spectacle. They were rewarded with a perfect show. From the very start, with a spirited performance by Latino beauty Shakira, the sound design was vindicated, with perfect (and powerful) sound filling the oval arena. The quality of the system was equally evident during rap star Snoop Dogg’s set, where the massive bass sound and driving rhythms set the whole audience dancing.
The choice of Midas Heritage analog mixing consoles for both FOH and monitor positions also turned out to be perfect. Despite the very tight schedule and ten minute changeover times, the three fully self-sufficient FOH and monitor pairings performed flawlessly. The three Midas Heritage FOH/MON desk combinations (an A/B/C system) operated as follows: while System A was playing, System B was in line check backstage, and System C setting up, and so on. There were no sound checks, only line checks, and no guest consoles.
This made it possible to adhere exactly to the tight schedule. Jürgen Langhorst from EVI Audio, on site to support the sound team, was delighted with the way things panned out “Everyone in the crew-whether on stage or manning the consoles deserves the highest praise. They did an outstanding job throughout the entire nine-hour show!“
