EV XLC & Wireless Mic Systems Join a Cast of Legends for ‘James Burton and Friends’ Fundraiser
The “Who’s Who“ list of volunteers included Jeff “Skunk“ Baxter (Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan), Dr John, Eric Johnson, Brad Paisley, Steve Cropper and Doyle Dykes. The venue for the main “James Burton and Friends“ concert was, appropriately enough, the famous Municipal Auditorium in James Burton’s birthplace of Shreveport, Louisiana - the very venue in which Colonel Tom Parker first met Elvis, and home of the historic Louisiana Hayride radio show. Gulf Coast Sound of Rayne, La., supplied the lighting and PA for the illustrious event, bringing in an EV XLC rig powered by remote control EV P-RL amps, along with EV wireless mic and guitar systems, a Midas Heritage 3000 mixing console, and racks loaded with Klark Teknik equipment. Gulf Coast owner Larry Habetz considers this “once in a lifetime“ assemblage of guitar masters to be one of the highpoints on Gulf Coast’s resume:
“The whole festival had a very good vibe, from the friendliness of the organizers and performers to the atmosphere in the Municipal Auditorium itself - you can definitely feel the presence of all the greats who’ve passed through there. The James Burton Festival is set to be an annual event; we’re proud to have been part of the first one, and look forward to a long partnership with James Burton and his organization. James Burton was a genuine pleasure to work with - he really does have a heart as big as his talent. Everybody involved was blown away by the quality of the PA and our crew. Let me tell you, when someone like Steve Cropper, who wrote and played on “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’, tells you things are sounding great, you know you’re doing a good job! Performer after performer went out of their way to compliment us on the sound like that. Things sounded great throughout the 3500-seat auditorium, and the arrays precisely covered the room’s three balconies with no issues.“
“In this company, the performers needed to sound their best for each other as well as the audience,“ Habetz added. “I was standing next to Eric Johnson during Doyle Dykes’ set, and Johnson, who is well known for being a tone perfectionist, nudged me, smiled, and just said “Wow, listen to that!’ Similarly, when we first fired up the XLC rig, Production Manager Greg Miles started laughing, he was so impressed by the punchiness and transparency of the sound. Brad Paisley even commented on how good our EV-loaded proprietary monitors sounded. And, to top it all off, the whole mix had the inimitable Midas warmth from the Heritage 3000 at FOH. Needless to say, we handed out a lot of business cards - that really reinforces the buying decisions we make, and we obviously stand behind EV as a result. The impeccable service and support we receive from the Telex/EV family helps make all this all possible. But the icing on the cake was when Production Coordinator Tanya Shelton emailed us after the show to tell us that everyone involved agreed that it was the best the Municipal has ever sounded. To add something to the heritage of such a prestigious place is a real honor, and we’re looking forward to next year’s show.“
