Shuttlesound delivers first Electro-Voice Phoenix touring system in UK, plus first installation of Phoenix

August 11th, 2008

Formerly known as Psygnosis Sound & Light, and Black Giant Audio, the company used to rent out EV1810 rigs to the rave/garage scene back in the 1990s. Having re-branded itself as Event Sound earlier this year, the decision was taken to invest in new equipment to replace its older EV systems and recapture market share.

The investment has taken the shape of EV’s new Phoenix speakers, together with EV’s CP4000S amplifiers and EV Dx38 and DC One controllers. As well as an EV ZX5 monitor rig, the purchase includes EV microphones. Says Nick Billinghurst of Event Sound, “We investigated a good number of systems suited to the applications in which we were interested, narrowing it down to two for the live audition-one of which was the Electro-Voice Phoenix.

“From the moment we heard the Phoenix loudspeakers, it was clear that they had just the sound we had been searching for: high quality and well-balanced. It is so easy to set up the system, position the speakers, connect, and go. And it looks impressive! The fact that it gives such clarity in the high and mid-range, whilst at the same time punching out incredible lows, makes it ideal for the uses we have planned for, namely the mid to large concert scene, both indoor and outdoor.“

Designed for tremendous SPL and sonic headroom, as well as ease of transport and set-up, Phoenix is intended to fulfill the needs of the live sound PA professional who finds that X-Array is just too much and QRx is not quite enough. Utilizing dual ND2 neodymium compression drivers on a manifold horn and state-of-the-art DVX woofers, its high-output performance has been optimized to reproduce rock, pop, and dance styles of music.

Event Sound first used the system at Inspire 08, an open-air showcase for local bands that is part of the Reading Glade Festival. Billinghurst reports that the Phoenix debut was “everything we wanted and more. We had lots of comments about how good the sound was, and have received many enquiries on the back of that event.“

BIRMINGHAM’S ASYLUM TAKES PHOENIX

Last month, Shuttlesound provided a club sound system of Phoenix enclosures, along with a full complement of EV microphones, for Birmingham live venue The Asylum. Installed by local agent Dave Black of PMT, the high SPL character of the Phoenix system is perfectly suited to this hard rock/nu metal club.
