Dropkick Murphys

December 10th, 2008

Boston-based punk rockers Dropkick Murphys are a touring machine with a legendarily live show. Their equipment takes a beating on the road, which is why the band and their crew rely upon Electro-Voice microphones night after night, as Monitor Engineer Andy Rooney explains:

“Last tour we used PL44s for our vocalist/bass player Ken, and PL80s for our backing vocalists Tim and James and drummer Matt. The PL44s cut through the mix with great clarity, and still have tremendous low-end frequency response. Whether Ken was singing high parts or low parts, the microphone translated very evenly, something at which some of the other “old staple’ vocal microphones fall short.“

“The PL44’s high gain before feedback was also great for the monitor wedges on stage,“ adds Rooney. “They were loud and clear enough in the mix to rip your head off! I couldn’t believe how loud I got them before even needing to reach for the graph. And they are really rugged! Our shows are pretty intense and our microphones take a beating and the PL44s and PL80s both held strong for the whole tour and are ready and waiting for the next run.“

“We used the PL80s for our background vocals and they had a very smooth, pleasant high-end. It sounded great from the word “go.’ On the next tour we hope to flip-flop them with the PL44s and try them on our lead vocals to see how they compare. I anticipate a good competition! We’ve also been using the Ravens on our guitar cabs for more than a year now, and they are a refreshing change from typical guitar cab mics. They look awesome and have the sound to back everything up.“

Dropkick Murphys FOH Engineer Michael “Mo“ Lapierre adds: “I absolutely love EV’s RE200 condensers! They’re great overhead mics-they give sizzle and clarity without ripping your face off with the cymbals. And I agree with Andy about the Ravens-they offer a perfect balance of old-school classic looks and great sound. They help fatten up the guitars without adding any unwanted “honk’ you hear with a lot of “classic’ guitar mics. And on top of all that we have the PL44, which is a perfect vocal mic. They make the vocals cut right through the calamity that Dropkicks create!“
