ATLANTA SOUND AND LIGHTING: SUCCESS AT SEA WITH EV
Atlanta Sound and Lighting recently returned from 16 days at sea with Sixth Man Productions and a host of stars, including one three-day cruise with southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd. Along with their production crew, ASL deployed a seaworthy range of audio solutions from EV, Dynacord and Klark Teknik for three separate cruises, the first of which was “Gimme Three Days”, with Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Sister Hazel, Drivin ‘n’ Cryin and special guests. This first outing—from Miami aboard the Carnival Fascination—featured two main stages and two smaller stages, with multiple acoustic performance areas around the ship, all calling for a specific size and shape of sound reinforcement.
For the main indoor stage, ASL spec’d EV XLD line arrays in a ground stacked configuration, using EV’s ground support skids. ASL’s Steve “Dublin” Stapleton reported: “For Skynyrd we were on hand with stacks and racks—eight XLD boxes per side, four EV MT2 manifold subs per side, and L-R EQ via a Klark Teknik Helix master. Steve Kross, Skynyrd’s FOH Engineer, was very happy with the performance of the XLD. He commented that a lot of line array boxes suffer from lower efficiency at higher SPLs, noting how uniform the characteristics of the XLD boxes were at any SPL.”
On the Main Outdoor stage (the Lido Deck) ASL spec’d a three over four configuration--three EV X-Array Xn boxes over four EV MT2 manifold subs. “Also, just for fun,” Stapleton added “we took one of the Dynacord PAs from the Rock Boat rooms and set it up as a rear fill array—a six box XA2 system that sure shook the back pool area. Sometimes you’ve got to make rock’n’roll loud absolutely everywhere!”
After dark, the ship’s smaller stages really came to life in ASL’s hands. The “Puttin’ on the Ritz” stage at the rear of the vessel featured a Dynacord Cobra-2 system powered by EV P3000 amps, with a Midas Verona console at FOH and a Midas Siena holding down monitor beach. All monitors were EV XW12s powered by EV CP3000 amps, controlled with six channels of Klark Teknik Helix EQ. “Having the ability to control the display on the master Helix via the PFL on the console made life extremely easy,” said Stapleton, “it’s the perfect unison between analog and digital—really good for recent converts to mixing on digital… it offers the best of both worlds. Everyone involved with production was really happy with the high production values and sound quality, so much so that there will be a Skynyrd cruise with Sixth Man again next year.”
ASL has helped make Sixth Man Productions’ annual rock ‘n’ roll cruises a success for the past six years.
