PROBABLY THE LOUDEST HORSE BARN IN THE WORLD… EV AT THE GEORGIA NATIONAL FAIRGROUNDS

“We have a rock solid relationship with the Fairgrounds and George Neal, their Electrical Superintendent,” says ASL’s Steve “Dublin” Stapleton. “This dates back three to four years when we installed three zones of four box EV XLC line arrays in their Howard Murphy Johnson building, all powered by P3000 amplifiers, all protected with Dx38 processing. George and his team flew the arrays and mounted the racks; I checked things over, did some tuning, and we were good to go. This proved a great solution in a very reverberant space, offering full intelligibility and keeping all the energy off the walls. These guys are a real pleasure to work with.”

 

Fast forward to April this year and a routine visit by Stapleton to the Fairgrounds, where a chat with George Neal centered on speaker systems for a large covered horse arena and a covered livestock barn.

 

“These offered some interesting challenges,” says Stapleton. “The covered horse arena has eight 24-feet span fans which generate quite a bit of air velocity within the space and, being in the south, these fans get a lot of use. The big problem in the livestock barn is the sheer amount of animals and the industrial hair dryers used for show grooming. As you can imagine, the noise floor in these buildings is extremely high for an announcement system!”

 

After gathering as much information on the facilities as possible, Stapleton began researching potential speaker system solutions. The product he had in mind from day one was the Sx600 PI from Electro-Voice.

 

“I heard these boxes while working at the EV Academy in Atlanta last year,” he says, “so I called my EV rep Scott Floyd (Vision 2 Marketing) and had an Sx600 sent out to me. Scott and I went down to see George at the fairgrounds, demoed it in the parking lot, and the rest is history.”

 

Four Sx600PIs were spec’d for the covered horse arena, powered by a single EV CP3000S amp and controlled by a Dx38. Eight Sx600PIs cover the horse barn, powered by two EV CP3000S amps and one Dx38 controller. Once again, George Neal and his team fully installed the systems and called Stapleton in for the final adjustments.

 

“I went down there for the tune up and once again these boxes amazed me with their clarity. After a couple of weeks I called George to see how things were going and he told me the only complaint people have is ‘TURN IT DOWN!’ I take that ‘complaint’ as a compliment every time, with a big smile on my face!”
