CANADA'S JUNO AWARDS CELEBRATIONS SOUND STELLAR WITH EQUIPMENT FROM TELEX COMMUNICATIONS
The 2005 Juno Awards took place in Winnipeg on April 3rd, the culmination of four days of awards-related live events and festivities throughout the city. Top Canadian touring & production company Sound Art provided audio systems for numerous shows and parties held before, during and after the prestigious Canadian music awards ceremony, comprised largely of equipment from Telex Communications pro audio brands EV, Dynacord, Midas and Klark Teknik.
The fact that the weekend would be characterized by both superb sound quality and top talent was evident as soon as people stepped off their planes. Visitors were welcomed to the city by local artists, performing on two stages at Winnipeg International Airport through a compact powerhouse P.A. featuring Dynacord® PowerMate™ mixers and EV® Sx300™ main and monitor speakers.
Takin’ Care of Business…
Winnipeg’s most famous son, Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive, got the festivities started in a proper fashion at the Winnipeg Convention Centre kickoff dinner, which also featured performances by fellow Manitobans The Waking Eyes (2005 Juno nominees), Joey Gregorash (Manitoba’s first Juno winner), multiple Juno nominee Doc Walker and numerous others, reflecting the rich and diverse regional music scene.

“JunoFest” – You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet
On April 1st, the two-night “JunoFest” kicked the celebrations into high gear, with over 120 bands performing in 16 local venues. Again, the emphasis was on Winnipeg and Manitoba’s impressive list of musical talent old and new. Soon to be 2005 Juno winners The Wailin’ Jennys played a highlight set, as did the reunited Harlequins. Ten of the sixteen venues used EV sound systems built around EV® Xi™1152 and Xi™2181 boxes, EV® stage monitors, and Midas® Venice™ mixing consoles.
A wide range of events kept awards-goers occupied until the big night. Randy Bachman’s fellow “most famous” son of Winnipeg, Burton Cummings of The Guess Who, played host to a “Songwriters Circle” at the Burton Cummings Theatre in downtown Winnipeg, where artists such as Buffy Sainte-Marie and Alan Doyle (Great Big Sea) shared personal recollections of their lives in music. The festivities were taken to the streets on April 3rd, with a block party on Portage Avenue that featured DJs and more local live music, along with EV® Xi™ boxes, EV® monitors and Klark Teknik® processing.
The Juno Awards
The main event took place that evening at Winnipeg’s MTS Centre, with live broadcasts of performances by The Tragically Hip, Sum 41, “Canadian Idol” winner Kalan Porter, Simple Plan, and k.d. lang. Get well soon wishes were extended to absent Canadian rock icon Neil Young, recovering in New York after a brain aneurysm. Perhaps the highpoint of the evening was a tribute to Winnipeg’s music legacy and promising musical future, fronted by festival figureheads Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings, and featuring numerous local artists who performed an array of Guess Who classics to the wildly enthusiastic crowd. Broadcast across Canada with the help of dozens of channels of Telex® BTR™ wireless and a Telex/RTS™ ADAM® digital matrix for the production staff, the events ceremony reaffirmed Winnipeg’s proud musical heritage with a seamless production onstage and behind the scenes. Sound production for the awards ceremony was from Mr. Mix Audio.
Workin’ Overtime...
The awards ceremony may have been over, but the party certainly wasn't. The crowds once again hit the streets of Winnipeg for block rocking beats courtesy of DJ Grant Paley, and the biggest of many post-awards parties, the Sony/BMG party at Empire, which hosted more performances from Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings and The Trews. The P.A. for the post-show bash featured four Xi2182 boxes per side, three Xi2181 per side, Xw12 stage monitors, KT DN360 EQs and KT DN9848 stage and monitor processing.
