EV XLE LINE ARRAY SOLVES SOUND PROBLEMS AT MINNESOTA CHAPEL
Audio Logic Systems of Bloomington, Minn., completed the installation, which replaced an outmoded system in the sixty-year old chapel. Installation Manager Jason Kartak explained:
“The Sisters needed a new system for speech and light music applications. The chapel is large, cavernous stone building, so reverberation was an obvious issue that could be addressed with the high level of pattern control afforded by the XLE. We needed a solution that would focus point the audio down into the audience without spraying sound around the room. That said, a large line array would have been overkill here, so the XLE really fitted the niche.
“After modeling and measuring the room with EASE and SMAART, we specified a single mono array of five XLE boxes, flown 28-feet up in the apex of the altar arch. The rake is quite dramatic—the room is about 80-feet deep by 40-feet wide—so we used a pullback point to aim the boxes precisely to cover every seat. The XLE was easy to install and has remarkable sound quality for such a small box; great low-end response (75Hz) and the warm, responsive character of neodymium transducers. That little array is hard to see up there, but the sound is even, warm and intelligible throughout the room."
Kartak added: “In addition, an Xi-1082 low-profile wedge serves as a pastoral monitor/delay, aimed back at the pulpit from the back of the chapel. Two more Xi-1082s are mounted as delays in one side room; the other larger side room has a QRx112 with an Xi-1082 downfill. Power is all EV: CPS2.11, CPS2.8 and CPS2.4 amplifiers power the main rig, with a CPS2T amp for the 70V system. We also installed EV RE2-PRO wireless microphone systems with RE510 condenser heads and RE97Tx mini mics.
“The old system was comprised of a mixer and column speakers that must have been at least 35 years old—pretty primitive stuff. This install represented a major upgrade in sound quality and user-friendliness: We installed the right products for the job using all-EV from input to output, and were able to keep within their budget doing so. Plus the system is easy to use: the nuns run it themselves with a touchscreen control.
"The XLE is working really well for us—we’re already spec’ing it for two upcoming projects. It brings line array precision and control into tricky or tight spaces where a larger array would have too much size, weight and power. It’s simply a really useful, well thought-out product.”
