ELECTRO-VOICE GETS IN SHAPE WITH FITNESS GURUS

The aerobics enthusiasts at Shuttlesound are recovering from a mega workout after supplying more than 80 Electro-Voice loudspeakers of every shape and size to the International Fitness Showcase in Blackpool, England. Occupying every inch of the Winter Gardens, the IFS event is the ultimate collective experience for fitness instructors and enthusiasts, providing three amazing days of dance, aerobics, step, combat, conditioning, lectures, workshops and mind body sessions.
Attended by fitness freaks from all over the world, the event spread into ten separate locations around the conference center; classes and lectures for audiences of 100 upwards in the smaller rooms, large-scale social events for up to 1000, and mass workouts for up to 1500 people in the Empress Ballroom.

Jason Kelly of Shuttlesound provided technical support for the event. From the smallest rooms using EV Force speakers and subs, going up through the ZX and Plasma ranges, to the 500-plus capacity suites using QRx and Phoenix loudspeakers, the sheer breadth and versatility of the Electro-Voice sound reinforcement portfolio was fully on display.

Arena 1—one of the largest Winter Gardens’ facilities—was kitted out with an EV XLD line array system, powered by EV P3000 RL amplifiers, all run via IRIS-Net management software. Doubling up as a demonstration theatre, Arena 1 turned into a 1000-capacity discotheque at night, with ample sound reinforcement via six XLD281 full-range boxes per side and four XS212 subs. The disco complemented the IFS Gala Awards Dinner and Dance (held the same night in the 250-capacity Spanish Hall)—tidily equipped with an EV ZX Series sound system.

Perhaps most impressive of all was the sight of 1500 fitness instructors and students exercising en masse in the famous Empress Ballroom, with the aid of a substantial EV XLC line array sound system. Four XLC127+ line array cabinets were ground-stacked over two XLC215 subs on each side of the stage, fronted by with a pair of XSubs for extra bass boost. EV Plasma1 and SxA360 powered speakers were used as monitors. Eight of the new Tour Grade Series TG7 amplifiers were used, fitted with RCM26 DSP modules and running EV's IRIS-Net open-platform comprehensive software suite to realize transparent network control and supervision.

Jason Kelly of Shuttlesound had the task of babysitting ten sound systems, all of them being used for an application that is famous for delivering poor audio. “Fitness enthusiasts are usually accustomed to hearing systems that distort, CD players that jump about more than they do, and radio mics that drop out. We provided all the instructors in Blackpool with RE-2 wireless mic systems and RE97 headset mics. This, together with the solidly reliable performance of all the EV loudspeaker systems, has opened the industry’s eyes and ears to the importance of good-quality audio equipment.”
