Electro-Voice XLC line array dominates N. Ireland dance scene
In June 2007, Park Audio Production’s owner Glenn Gamble took aim at the top end of the audio rental market in Northern Ireland. By June 2008, his company was providing a line-array system for 18,000 people who came to the beach in Portrush to hear The Chemical Brothers’ headline show.
Founded nearly 10 years ago, Park Audio Productions used to earn its living from small dance events and live bands. But, following the purchase of a comprehensive inventory of Electro-Voice XLC line-array cabinets, Electro-Voice amplifiers, and Klark Teknik processing, Belfast-based Park Audio has come to dominate the dance music scene in Northern Ireland.
Now the single largest rental provider of high-spec line array sound systems in the region, Park Audio was commissioned by promoters PLM to supply systems for the beachside dance music festival featuring DJs such as Fedde Le Grand, Utah Saints, and Eric Prydz, and headlined by The Chemical Brothers.
Park Audio’s systems engineer Mark Morrison described the set-up: “The plot was 16x XLC127 DVX per side, 6x X-Subs (stacked 6 high) per side, and the center fill of 6x XLC215 plus 2x XLC127 DVX worked perfectly. For monitors we used EV ZX5s; side-fills were X-Array cabinets. The event was a complete triumph for EV; the sound was very clear and very punchy at front-of-house, despite the wind—Portrush has to be the windiest location in Northern Ireland! The system was running close to max, but EV’s Tour Grade amps took what we gave them without complaint. The system was overseen by IRIS-Net control software to ensure we had adequate headroom throughout the event.”
Park’s decision to buy Electro-Voice’s XLC compact line array was taken just as EV launched its DVX upgrade—the incorporation of new EV 12-inch low-frequency/mid-bass woofers into the XLC127 cabinets, giving greater high-SPL stability and full-bandwidth intelligibility than previously available.
“These cabinets have certainly paid off, as we now have an important niche market to ourselves. Starting with the main stage of the Planet Love dance festival in Dublin, we’ve got a very busy summer ahead of us.”
