Dorlis pursued classical guitar from a very young age, but by age 17 had dropped out of school to hitchhike and busk the streets of Japan. Her style developed over these travails as she began combining classical and folk with distinct gypsy and swing style guitar, not to mention the soulful vocals that drew crowds wherever she performed.
Once back home from her travels Dorlis began busking her usual, local spots around Okayama. By chance, one day famous Japanese music producer Ken Matsubara passed Dorlis on the street. Captivated by her unique style, he felt Dorlis had the kind of potential he had discovered in other acts he had developed, including Misia, Ken Hirai, BoA, and CrystalKay. Since then Dorlis' career has blossomed. A combination of unique guitar playing, memorable melodies, and intelligent lyrics, Dorlis represents the next generation of street music, a kind of swing pop that defies comparison.
Dorlis released her debut single, Hitori goto no you ni aishiteta, on December 4, 2002, which became a radio hit, driving throngs to record shops. Dorlis quickly received power play status from 15 FM stations and her CD sold over ten thousand copies almost overnight. Dorlis' second single, Marble no tsuki, was released on April 9th, 2003. Her third single, 24 jikan sekai issyu, sold even more copies and her CD reached third on the indies hit chart! On January 19, 2005, Dorlis signed with the major label Victor Entertainment to release her single Mariposa -- after being courted by no less than eleven other labels. Her second major label single, Hadanosukima, was released in early 2005 and selected as the theme song for TBS network's Japanese drama Kegareta shita, written by Makiko Uchidate and starring leading actress Naoko Iijima. Dorlis' major label debut, Swingin’Street2, was released on June 29, 2005 and reached #20 on the Oricon chart. Since then, Dorlis has been touring and working on new material, and critics anticipate Dorlis to become a major force in the Japanese music scene.
